As work at Las Casas enters the final weeks we are making plans for our next project, which now looks most likely to be in Cripple Creek.
The Habitat Board met last week to review the many considerations that go into making a decision about where to build, including finances, applications from future families, and the availability of volunteers. Our plan is to finish Las Casas in the first week August and be ready to break ground at the new house in September.
In the past week we
made great progress at Las Casas. We want to send a special thanks to the group of nine men from the Fort Carson Army Corps of Engineers, Special Forces and Construction Operations Division, who spent the day with us on Saturday, July 12. They installed a lot of trim, some interior doors, and more closet shelving.
We also want to thank Carpet Direct of Colorado Springs who is donating the labor to install flooring in Unit E on Thursday and Friday.
This week we will be installing more trim, doors, and shelving. So join us if you can, anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturdays, at 850 Forest Edge Rd.
The board will meet again at the end of this month to discuss longer-term strategic planning as Habitat enters its 15th year of building in Teller County. Including the six units at Las Casas, we will have completed 27 homes. The need for affordable housing continues to grow and we envision taking an active part in meeting that need.
